2015 Emmy Predictions: Best Supporting Actress in a TV Movie or Limited Series

Like last year, American Horror Story is expected to dominate in this category. Sarah Paulson and Kathy Bates are already expected to get nominations for their performances in the show’s fourth season. Another actress who has a chance of getting another nomination from the American Horror Story cast is Angela Bassett, who was the surprise nominee last year. Bassett doesn’t seem to be attracting as much attention as she did last year, yet her powerhouse performance easily could pull another upset in the supporting category. Even less likely, though very deserving of a nomination, is Frances Conroy’s performance in American Horror Story, whose acting in Freak Show was the very definition of ‘less is more.’

Mo’Nique also seems to be a guarantee for her performance as “Ma Rainey” in HBO’s blues biopic film, Bessie. The Academy may also vote in the favor of heavy contenders in the Limited Series category, such as Janet McTeer in The Honourable Woman, Claire Foy in Wolf Hall or Zoe Kazan in Olive Kitteridge. Academy voters could also nominate in the favor of big-name recognition such as Susan Sarandon for The Secret Life of Marilyn Monroe or Cynthia Nixon for Stockholm, Pennsylvania. However both Lifetime films Sarandon and Nixon starred in received mixed reviews, which could hinder their chances. The momentum between these two is with Nixon, whose performance of a mother who wants to reconnect with her child she never got to know is one that is both heartfelt and tragic at the same time. Nixon’s performance is outside anything she has done before with her acting and it is likely Emmy voters will notice this. One final, but unlikely nominee could either be Mary Lynn Rajskub or Michelle Fairley for FOX’s 24: Live Another Day. However, both are not expected to be nominated since it appears 24 has been getting hardly any attention from voters.
