13 Days of Horror: Annie Wilkes in Misery (1990)

“I’m your number one fan.” That is what Paul Sheldon (James Caan) immediately hears when he awakes in the guest room of Annie Wilkes (Kathy Bates) after barely surviving a car accident in a freak snowstorm. Both his legs are shattered, he cannot move, and his only contact is Annie, who is obsessed with his Misery novels and looks at him with such admiration. Only issue is, Annie Wilkes is insane and she actually is holding her favorite author captive. Kathy Bates is frightening in this movie as an obsessed fan whose behavior is manic and utterly dangerous. Even those who are not often squeamish will find themselves screaming during the infamous “Hobbling Scene.” Kathy Bates deservingly won an Oscar for her performance.
