2016 Emmy Winner Prediction: Lead Actress in a Drama Series

Like the Lead Actor category, there is no clear frontrunner this year in the Lead Actress category. It is very much possible that Viola Davis will succeed in another win after her historic win last year. What puts Davis at a disadvantage is the poor reception of her show’s second season, which could hinder her chances at another win. The one nominee who could grab another win is Claire Danes, who continues to wow audiences with her complicated performance in Homeland. She has already won two Emmys for her role and winning a third is not outside of the realm of possibility. Also, another a major contender is Taraji P. Henson, whose scene-stealing role as Cookie Lyon in Empire, nearly defeated Viola Davis for the Emmy last year. Henson has won a Golden Globe for the performance and that should function as evidence of her chances of a win. Keri Russell shouldn’t be underestimated at all either. Her surprise nomination proves The Americans has enough clout to pull off a win. Russell could also benefit from a win as compensation for the popular show having been ignored by Emmy voters for nearly three years. Another actress who shouldn’t be underestimated is Tatiana Maslaney, whose acting is the very definition of versatility in Orphan Black. However, Maslaney’s chances may be hurt by voters largely not watching Orphan Black, which is a true travesty given her caliber of acting. However, it seems the momentum is with Robin Wright, whose performance in House of Card’s fourth season was, by far, the best thing about the newest season. Her work in the most recent season provided an entirely new arc for Claire Underwood by conveying how calculating she could be in the face of vulnerability. Wright also has the sentiment on her side, having never won for House of Cards. This could very likely change this Emmy go-around.

The Nominees:
Claire Danes – Homeland
Viola Davis – How to Get Away With Murder
Taraji P. Henson – Empire
Tatiana Maslany – Orphan Black
Keri Russell – The Americans
Robin Wright – House of Cards

Will Win: Robin Wright, House of Cards
Could Win: Viola Davis, How to Get Away With Murder
Should Win: Tatiana Maslaney, Orphan Black
